5th Grade Science Curriculum-
Students will develop content knowledge in the areas of life science, physical science, and earth science. In addition, students will conduct science investigations following the scientific method by developing a testable question, making a hypothesis/prediction, following a well-designed procedure, forming a conclusion, and communicating results.
Science Notebooks-
The purpose of Science Notebooks is to build science content and process skills in a manner similar to the way scientists work. Students will use them as a record for their scientific findings, questions, thoughts, procedures, and data.
Before our class begins an experiment or investigation students will be recording their thinking and planning. During the investigation, they will record words, pictures, photos, numbers, etc... At the end, we will use our notebooks to reflect on our thinking and data and share our results with one another.

Trimester 2
National Geographic We are exploring the genre of informational text by reading National Geographic. We are investigating cross-curricular research articles which cover mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. Exploring Constellations We are exploring God's Truth, Beauty, and Goodness within our sky. We will uncover how telescopes help us study the stars, identify the differences and similarities of stars, star movement, and the importance of constellations and their role throughout history. Waste in our World Unit #1: What is Waste? We are exploring the meaning of the word, "waste" and will assess our background knowledge. We will explore a few websites to gather information and write a research report on compost and recycling that occurs in nature. |
Trimester 3
Introduction to Animal Adaptations
This week (March 2-16) students will learn about animal
structures and adaptations using a variety of materials
and activities from a discovery bin that we borrowed from the Morton Arboretum.
Waste in our World
Unit #2: What is Compost?
We are exploring the similarities and differences between soil and compost. We will uncover why soil is important to life and how the compost life cycle creates quality soil that is good for growing. We will create a compost bin and learn which items can be composted and which items cannot.
Waste in our World
Unit #3: Reducing Waste
We will be focusing on the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We are encouraged to understand the meaning of those three words by creating a promise to take care of God's creation, the Earth.
We will create a recycled sculpture that bridges the connection of art and science.
Waste in our World
Unit #4: Can Our Waste Damage Our Earth?
We will be focusing on hazardous waste and how items we use can be dangerous in our everyday lives. We will conduct research to gain a deeper understanding of how hazardous waste, when disposed improperly, can hurt our environment, plants, animals, and human being too.
Waste in our World
Unit #5: How Can We Improve Our Carbon Footprint?
We will be exploring the meaning of the word, "carbon footprint" and will assess our background knowledge. We will explore a few websites to gather information and apply our new knowledge to help save our Earth.
Waste in our World
Unit #6: Where Does Our Garbage Go?
We will be exploring what happens to our garbage after it enters the garbage trucks.
Waste in our World
Unit #7: What About Our Water?
We will investigate how water is recycled and which chemicals or substances can make our drinking water dangerous.
