Independent Reading: Students are expected to be reading outside of the classroom every day. For Trimester I, students should devote 25 minutes to their independent reading. This is EVERY day (yes, even weekends!) Students can read chapter books, magazines, informational text, comic books, etc..
Through the fifth grade Writer’s Workshop, students work at their own pace to create poetry, narratives and essays. Grammar and spelling practice are incorporated into Writer’s workshop and supplemented weekly by short grammar lessons and assessments (e.g., kinds of nouns, subject-verb agreement, direct objects, etc.) and differentiated spelling lists. Our grammar and writing work is supplemented with exercises from Voyages in English (Loyola Press, 2011.)Spelling and word work follows the strategies of Words Their Way (Pearson, 2015.)
